Understanding why storage drive capacities reported in operating systems differ from advertised drive packaging capacities:
Decimal SI Standards (Base 10)
Storage manufacturers use powers of 1000 ($10^3$). A 1 TB drive equals $1,000,000,000,000$ bytes.
Binary IEC Standards (Base 2)
Operating systems (Windows, Linux) process memory using powers of 1024 ($2^{10}$). Hence $1\text{ TiB} = 1,099,511,627,776$ bytes. This accounts for why a "1 TB" drive shows up as ~931 GiB in OS file managers.
