Did You Know? Why Purple was the World's Most Expensive Color
In ancient times (starting around 1600 BCE with the Phoenicians), the rich pigment known as Tyrian Purple was worth more than its weight in pure gold. Extracting just a single gram of purple dye required harvesting and crushing over 10,000 tiny sea snails (Bolinus brandaris) along the Mediterranean coast.
Because of this immense labor, purple fabric was strictly reserved for Roman emperors, kings, and royalty—giving rise to the term "royal purple." In fact, Roman Emperor Aurelian famously refused to allow his wife to buy a purple silk shawl because it cost three times its weight in gold! It wasn't until 1856, when 18-year-old chemist William Henry Perkin accidentally invented synthetic purple dye (mauveine), that purple became affordable for everyday people.
Understanding Color Codes & Digital Color Spaces
Digital screens create millions of visible colors by combining varying intensities of Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) light. Converting between color formats like HEX, RGB, and HSL is a core workflow for web developers, UI designers, and digital artists.
HEX (Hexadecimal)
HEX codes represent colors in a 6-character hexadecimal format (0–9, A–F) preceded by a hash mark (#RRGGBB). Each pair represents the 8-bit channel intensity from 00 (0) to FF (255).
Example: #3B82F6
RGB / RGBA
RGB defines colors using decimal intensity levels from 0 to 255 for Red, Green, and Blue. RGBA includes a fourth Alpha parameter (0.0 to 1.0) for controlling opacity and transparency.
Example: rgb(59, 130, 246)
HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness)
HSL represents colors based on human perception: Hue in degrees (0–360° on the color wheel), Saturation percentage (0% gray to 100% full color), and Lightness percentage (0% black to 100% white).
Example: hsl(217, 91%, 60%)
