Did You Know? Time Passes Differently Across the Universe

Time is not constant. According to Albert Einstein's Theory of Relativity, time speeds up or slows down depending on gravity and speed. A clock ticking on Earth does not tick at the exact same speed as a clock on Mars or near a massive black hole.

🪐 Planetary Gravity & Time

Clocks tick slower near stronger gravitational fields. Because Jupiter has much stronger gravity than Earth, time moves slightly slower there. Conversely, on Mars or the Moon (with weaker gravity), time ticks slightly faster relative to Earth.

🛰️ GPS Satellites in Earth Orbit

Satellites orbiting Earth experience weaker gravity and high speeds. Their onboard atomic clocks gain roughly 38 microseconds per day compared to clocks on Earth's surface. Engineers must constantly correct satellite timers so your GPS location stays accurate.

🕳️ Gravitational Time Dilation Near Black Holes

Near a supermassive black hole, gravity is so intense that time slows down dramatically. An hour spent near the event horizon of a massive black hole could equal years or decades passing for an observer far away in space.

⚡ Speed & Velocity (Special Relativity)

The faster you travel through space, the slower you experience time relative to someone standing still. If an astronaut traveled at 99% the speed of light, one year inside their spacecraft would equal over seven years back on Earth.
